Automotive Clay
Modeling.

Background.

This 4 month program at Monash University (completed while on 3rd year exchange) gave students the opportunity to better understand the sculpting side of automotive design. In teams of two, separate models would be created from each partner’s concept sketches. The resulting model is a testament to the sculptor’s skill and ability to effectively translate a 2D drawing into 3D.

Process.

The basic steps to prepare the bench for sculpting are as follows:

1.0

Develop your concept.

4.0

Mount Styrofoam blank on support block and affix to mirror. Carve basic surface proportions.

7.2

Surface continuity and reflections may be checked using reflective foil, pressed against the clay with a hard edge.

Final thoughts.

Artistic clay sculpture was never something I was ever interested in and/or good at. This elective really changed my perception of clay sculpting as a profession. Working off my teammate’s drawings meant that the intended result had to be communicated very effectively on paper. It is a gruelling process getting the shapes to work correctly from all angles.

Adding clay (heating, scoring and laying up) then smoothing it back down to the correct place can take hours. The final results show that it is possible to complete a low fidelity model with the right attitude, close attention to 3 dimensional continuity and the ability to effectively respond to constructive feedback.

Done is better than perfect.
